“None of us are free until all of us are free.”
Being transgender or non-binary, especially if you are a BIPOC, means that you face certain dangerous realities. In 2018, 26 transgender or gender non-conforming people died in the United States as a result of fatal violence. The majority of these people were black transgender women. I just learned today (12/18/2019) of a Hispanic transgender woman, Angel Rose, who was found dead right on the heels of Christmas. I could research all the statistics on how just being a person of color can mean your marginalization ( the daily instances of discrimination, fewer access to resources do to the legacy of redlining, institutionalized racism, jim crow, school to prison pipeline. etc) and how being a transgender or gender non-conforming person increases your changes of poverty, homelessness, employment discrimination, trauma, and violence.
I don’t need too. We already know. Cis-people. This is real life. We HAVE to look out for our community. Below are a list of several DC based organizations that support transgender and gender non confirming people (especially black, indigenous, people of color). We can donate. We can follow. We can volunteer. We can do something. We must. We fucking must.
