MBCT Program – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

This FAQ covers basic information. Additional details about participation, expectations, and screening will be explained during the orientation session.

What is MBCT?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) integrates mindfulness practice with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques to help prevent depressive episodes and address the anxiety that can accompany depression. This community-based adaptation features shorter sessions to improve accessibility.

Is MBCT therapy?
MBCT is not therapy. This program is not a substitute for clinical treatment.

Who is the facilitator?

Kimberly Johnson, M.S, CHES, Qualified Mindfulness Instructor, will facilitate this program. She completed the MBCT Teacher Training Intensive at the Center for Mindfulness and Compassion, as well as the MBCT Practicum and Inquiry Essentials Courses at the Center for Mindfulness Studies. In 2022, she founded the AAHP Mindfulness program and has since led more than 10 cohorts, supporting over 150 participants. She received a Master’s degree in Health Promotion from the Maryland University of Integrative Health.

How much does MBCT cost?

The program costs $800. This covers the orientation, individual interviews, eight weekly sessions, and program retreat.

What should I expect during the MBCT Orientation?
An overview of the program, its goals, structure, and weekly expectations. You will meet the facilitator and be able to ask questions before committing to participation.

What should I expect during the individual interview?

During the individual interview, we will discuss your goals for participating in the program, your personal history, and whether this program is suitable for you at this time.

What research shows that MBCT is effective?
MBCT has been shown to be as effective as maintenance doses of antidepressants in preventing relapse. It can lower relapse risk and reduce the severity of depression symptoms if they do return. (Goldberg et al, 2018)

Is MBCT right for me?

MBCT is most beneficial for people who:

  • Experience recurrent depression, including those seeking to support their recovery and prevent relapses

  • Have been advised to remain on antidepressant medication and are looking for a complementary approach to manage their mental health

  • Want to develop healthier responses to negative thoughts and feelings through mindfulness practice and cognitive approaches

If I am currently experiencing depression, can I participate?

If you’re experiencing acute symptoms that make it difficult to concentrate or participate in group activities, you may benefit from postponing participation.

Will sessions be held in person or online?
The orientation and program sessions will be held virtually. A Zoom link will be provided once you register.

Do I need prior experience with mindfulness or meditation?
No previous experience is required. MBCT is designed for beginners and those familiar with mindfulness alike.

Is MBCT suitable for all faiths?

MBCT is a health-promotion program and is secular (non-religious) and inclusive to individuals of all faith backgrounds.
